Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
