The anticipation about The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
