Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
