EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
