Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement report they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests show the liquid was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; investigators are currently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
City officials stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
A senior political figure commented the vandalism rendered him without words and needed to be solved promptly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the death of nine victims by a assailant targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
