Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
